Since 1988, the Ojai Film Society has been presenting quality independent, classic and foreign films to the Ojai Valley community. Our home has been the historic Ojai Playhouse, located in downtown Ojai across from the iconic post office tower. Although we normally show our films on Sunday afternoons, we had begun to add Saturdays for some of our more popular movies.
As part of our mission, we also support aspiring filmmakers, most recently with the Ojai Young Filmmakers Competition. We also hold special events with filmmakers, directors, cinematographers, and other film-related people who inform our audiences about their work. You can follow our activities on our website and Facebook pages.
Our nonprofit organization is governed by a diverse, dedicated board of film enthusiasts, each of whom brings a particular expertise to our mission. We thank them and our loyal subscribers, underwriters and advertisers who keep us funded year after year.
NOTE: On July 20, 2014, a water main, owned by Golden State Water Company (GSW), burst in front of the Ojai Playhouse, completely destroying the inside of the theater. Work to repair the building proceeded steadily until January 2015, when the second insurer for GSW refused to continue issuing funds for the project. The owner of the building, Khaled Al-Awar, presented the insurance company with a final settlement figure in October 2015, but the company denied liability. Mr. Al-Awar filed a lawsuit against GSW in November 2015.
Since the water main break, the Ojai Film Society has been showing Sunday-afternoon films at the Ojai Art Center Theater, 113 So. Montgomery St. Ojai.
