As a part of the major repair and renovation currently underway at the Ojai Playhouse, the Ojai Film Society has identified a number of specific projects it would like to undertake that will not be covered by the Golden State Water Co. insurance claim, but that would significantly improve the performance and quality of the theater’s presentations. The MountainFilm of Telluride event on Nov. 11 has been sold out but the Ojai Film Society would appreciate donations to our special projects fund.

SPECIAL PROJECTS AT THE OJAI PLAYHOUSE UNDER CONSIDERATION BY OFS
Move Air/Heating Vent in Projection Path – As many patrons of the Ojai Playhouse may have noticed, there is a wavy distortion in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. This is due to a heating and air conditioning register that vents directly into the projection path. As the Playhouse is an older building, it is likely that the theater’s builders never imagined that it would be used as a high-resolution digital projection room. Moving the register out of the projection path will solve this problem once and for all.
Angle Projection Window – In the projection booth there is a window that the projector beams through that is not properly angled away from the plane of the lens. As a result, a certain percentage of the light is reflected back at the lens, lowering overall contrast and making the screen image appear not as sharp and with lower contrast. The plan is to build a new frame to hold a new piece of optical in order to cut down on “flaring” the projection lens.
Sound Absorbent Material for Walls – While building a double wall to deaden outside noise from the screening space would be nice, it would be a very expensive project to finance and as such it is out of the scope of the current remodel. That said, installing sound absorbent material on the walls around the audience would cut down dramatically the “reflective” sound inside the theater, while helping with insulating outside noises. This would dramatically improve the overall sound quality making for a cleaner, crisper sound image.
Upgrade Projection Room – This is primarily a clean-up and re-organization project, but we are proposing new lighting and electrical, new flooring and drywall to make it easier to keep the projection room clean and dust free.
Upgrade Surround Sound Speakers – Currently the theater has only 4 surround sound speakers. We propose to add two to four more to more effectively immerse the audience in an immersive sound experience.
We want to thank Khaled Al-Awar and his family for their tenacity, generosity and commitment to rebuilding our theater—truly one of the crown jewels of Ojai’s cultural life!
